Why the network matters more than the token
USDT is not one thing. It is the same dollar claim issued separately on a dozen blockchains, and the copies do not talk to each other. Choosing the network is the actual decision when you send USDT, and getting it wrong is the most common expensive mistake in crypto.
The three you will meet:
- TRC20 (Tron) — addresses start with
T. Cheap, fast, and the default for exchange-to-exchange transfers. - ERC20 (Ethereum) — addresses start with
0x. Expensive to move, but required for most DeFi. - BEP20 (BNB Chain) — also
0x. Cheap, and dangerously easy to confuse with ERC20.
The rule that prevents almost every loss
Match the network on the sending side to the network on the receiving side, and check it on the screen you are actually looking at. Not the one you remember from last time — deposit networks change, and exchanges add and retire them.
- Open the deposit screen on the receiving end first, and select the network there.
- Copy the address it gives you for that network.
- On the sending side, select the same network explicitly. Never let it default.
- Send a small test amount first if the sum is meaningful. The fee on a test transfer is the cheapest insurance in this industry.
- Confirm the test arrived and is credited before sending the rest.
When TRC20 is the wrong choice
TRC20 is the cheap default, but not always the right one:
- You are going into DeFi. Most lending and DEX liquidity lives on Ethereum and its L2s. TRC20 USDT cannot reach it without bridging.
- The receiving venue does not support Tron. Some regulated exchanges list only ERC20 deposits.
- An L2 is cheaper for your route. Arbitrum and Base now move USDC and USDT for cents, and they connect directly to the Ethereum ecosystem.

What is USDT TRC20?
USDT issued on the Tron blockchain. The same Tether dollar exists on several networks — TRC20 on Tron, ERC20 on Ethereum, BEP20 on BNB Chain, and others. They are worth the same and are backed by the same reserves, but they live on different chains and cannot be sent between those chains directly. TRC20 became the default for transfers because Tron fees are a fraction of Ethereum's.
What is the difference between TRC20 and ERC20 USDT?
The network. TRC20 runs on Tron, where a transfer costs cents or is free if your account has energy staked, and confirms in seconds. ERC20 runs on Ethereum, where a transfer costs whatever gas costs that minute and settles in a block or two. ERC20 has deeper integration with DeFi; TRC20 is cheaper for plain transfers. What happens if I send TRC20 USDT to an ERC20 address?
A TRC20 address starts with T and an ERC20 address starts with 0x, so a wallet or exchange will normally refuse the transfer outright. The genuinely dangerous case is the one where the address format is identical — sending ERC20 USDT to a BEP20 deposit address, for example, since both use 0x. That transfer confirms, the funds land on the wrong chain, and recovery depends entirely on whether the recipient controls the private key on the destination chain. On an exchange, it usually means a support ticket and sometimes a permanent loss.
How much does a TRC20 transfer cost?
Tron charges in bandwidth and energy rather than a straightforward gas fee. In practice a USDT transfer costs a few dollars' worth of TRX if you pay from your balance, or close to nothing if you have staked TRX for energy. Exchanges usually charge their own flat withdrawal fee on top, commonly around $1, which is still far below what an ERC20 withdrawal costs at most times.
Do I need TRX in my wallet to send USDT on Tron?
Yes. As with every chain, the fee is paid in the native asset — TRX — not in the token you are moving. A wallet holding USDT and zero TRX cannot send anything. This is the single most common reason a TRC20 transfer fails.
